Peter Mignola - Studio Owner & Chief Engineer

Some of my earliest memories go back to listening to big band jazz on my dad's open reel Ampex 1/4". I was fascinated with how that thing worked. Later on I'd use it to record my rock band's rehearsals, in mono with one mic. I still have that deck. But the tipping point for me was my first recording session in a real studio with my high school punk band. I can still remember the thrill of (really) hearing our music played back for the first time. After that day, I knew I wanted to make and record music and there was no turning back. Over 25 years later, I still get that feeling after a good session. And it always makes me happy to see our clients realize that experience.

In '91 I moved from Manhattan to Brooklyn and converted a loft space to record my music and rehearse the jazz group I was gigging with. After a decade of building and providing technical services for dozens of studios in and around NYC, I decided to upgrade my project studio and open it to the public. Everything about Metrosonic, from the gear & the layout to the staff, reflects the esthetic I have developed as a composer, musician and engineer. And once you have been here I believe you will see the potential of how your project benefits from this. One of the great things about the work we do is the diverse community of people we meet over the years. I've had the opportunity to work with a wide variety of talented artists and producers including Moby, Steven Barken, Peter Gordon, Eric Johnson Trio, Michael McDonald, and Stanley Jordan as well as projects for ABC TV, Alderson Acoustics, Def Mix and Masters at Work.

Much of my time these days is spent running the studio, which includes everything from booking sessions and assigning the right engineer for each project to equipment repairs and modifications. Currently I'm prepping and mastering a live recording of Grand Street at the Knitting Factory (NYC) as a double CD. On the horizon is a project recording some compositions I've been kicking around over the past years. This promises to be a satisfying endeavor once I can set aside the time to dig into it. In the meantime, I'm looking forward to meeting you and welcoming your next project to Metrosonic.

Jon Martinez - Assistant Engineer

In February of 2008 I moved to Brooklyn from Arizona and began interning at Metrosonic. The first mix I worked on consisted of drywall, joint compound, and 2x4’s; and sounded like drills, saws, and hammers banging. After the build out was complete and the dust cleared, I began to assist the in-house engineers and producers. Recently I have been engineering projects for a handful of local Brooklyn/Manhattan artists, as well as assisting on other projects flowing through Metrosonic.

In the past three years in Brooklyn, I have had the pleasure of recording, and mixing albums for several very talented bands including, Bobb Trimble; Live @ Rose Lounge 09, Holistic's album "Technicolor", Florida's album "122 Halsey", Columboid's first EP, Cop City Chill Pillars, Jerkagram, Gary War, Sadness Saturn, and Servile Sect.

As an assistant Engineer at Metrosonic I have gained a profound amount of experience.  Working with such artists as Flight of The Conchords, Chromeo, Moby, Holy Ghost, Peter Rowan, The Hartley C White Project, Hank And Cupcakes, Black Acid, Irv Irving, and more recently The Damned Things, has been enlightening.

Early thrash metal, death metal, doom, and early hardcore are a few of my influences as well as all kinds of older garage/prog/folk/wolrd/what have you music, like; Chrissy Zebby Tembo and The Gnozi Family, Captain Beefheart, Frank Zappa and the Mothers of Invention, Dr. John, Hawkwind, Comus, A&R Machines, and Can to name a few.
